5 Day Uganda Birding Adventure

5 Days Uganda Birding Adventure will take you to some of the best birding sites in Uganda such as Mabamba swamp, UWEC, Botanical gardens along the shores of lake Victoria and Lake Mburo national park in western Uganda. During the 5 days Uganda birding adventure you will be able to view different bird species like the prehistoric shoebill stork, grey heron, African fish eagle, swamp flycatcher, northern masked weaver, white winged warbler, brown parrot, bare-faced go away bird among others.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: pick up and transfer to UWEC, Botanical garden along Lake Victoria shores, depending on your location on the first day of the 5 days Uganda birding adventure, our driver guide will pick you up and transfer to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) for birding. UWEC is a home of more than 120 bird species such as African fish eagle, giant kingfisher, the great blue turaco, common bulbul, little grey greenbul, grey parrot, slender billed weaver, tawny flanked prinia, stripped kingfisher among others. From UWEC you will proceed to botanical garden which is located along the shores of Lake Victoria. While at the gardens you will be able to spot different bird species such as yellow billed duck, lesser jacana, Senegal coucal, little stint, white winged tern, crowned hornbill, palm nut vulture, African grey parrot, African open billed stork, black headed heron, spur winged lapwing, pied kingfisher, Egyptian geese, red eyed dove, grey headed sparrow, water thick knee among others. After your birding experience at botanical gardens you will go for lunch where after you will transfer to the lodge for an evening relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Transfer to Mabamba swamp

Birding in Mabamba swamp, after an early breakfast on the second day of the 5 days Uganda birding adventure you will carry packed lunch and your driver guide will pick you up from the lodge and transfer to Mabamba swamp which is a home of over 300 bird species. Mabamba swamp is the best place for birding therefore upon arrival you will be briefed where after you will get into a dugout canoe with an experienced guide who will help you  to spot different birds such as the elusive shoebill stork, black heron, blue cheeked bee-eater, common bulbul, hadada ibis, great white pelican, great cormorant, crowned hornbill, yellow billed tinkerbird, purple heron, red headed love bird, shinning blue kingfisher, long toed lapwing, little egret, double toothed barbet, grey parrot, speckled mousebird among others. After your birding experience you will start the journey to Kampala where you will have a stopover at another swamp to view birds like white winged warbler, papyrus gonolek, weyns weaver, yellow crowned bishop among others and then proceed to Kampala where you will arrive early evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Mburo national park

After breakfast on the third day of the 5 days Uganda birding adventure, you will check out of the lodge and meet up with your driver to transfer to Lake Mburo national park in western Uganda which is a home of over 350 bird species. The journey takes about 4 to 5 hours drive and on the way you will have a stopover at the Equator where you will take photos, buy souvenirs and then proceed to the park. Upon arrival you will enter Lake Mburo national park through Nshara gate where you will be able to spot different bird species such as brown parrot, greater blue eared starling, emerald spotted wood dove, lilac breasted roller, trilling cisticola, African grey hornbill, brown parrot among others. You will later continue to Rwonyo restaurant for lunch where after you will go for an afternoon game drive in the park. During the game drive you drive along the zebra track where you will view birds like black bellied bustard, flappet lark, African wattled plover, yellow throated long claw, animals like impala, buffaloes, topi, elands, zebras among others. After the game drive you will drive to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4:  Nature walk and afternoon boat cruise

Nature walk, after an early breakfast on the fourth day of the 5 days Uganda birding adventure your driver guide will pick you up from the lodge to go for an interesting nature walk where you will be able to get up-close and personal with different wildlife species. During the nature walk you will be able to spot birds like African wattled lapwing, bare faced go away bird, blue headed coucal, hairly breasted barbet, brown chested lapwing, tabora cisticola, southern ground hornbill, red faced barbet among others. You will also be able to see animals like buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, impalas, elands, waterbucks, view different plants among others. After the nature walk you will return to the lodge for lunch.

Afternoon boat cruise, after lunch you will go for an amazing boat cruise where you will be able to view water bird species like papyrus gonolek, the prehistoric shoebill stork, white winged swamp warbler, blue breasted kingfisher, southern ground hornbill, pied and malachite kingfisher, African darter, water thicknee, spur winged plover, African fin foot, African water rail, lesser and greater swamp warbler, papyrus yellow warbler among others. During the boat cruise you will also be able to view hippos and crocodiles in water, buffaloes, antelopes, warthogs along the shores, view fishermen fishing among others. After the boat cruise you will drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Morning game drive and departure to Kampala

Morning game drive,  after breakfast on the last day of the 5 days Uganda birding adventure you will check out of the lodge and meet up with your driver guide to go for a morning game drive where you will drive along the Kigambira loop. During the game drive you will be able to view bird species like green capped Eremomela, black collared barbet, red headed lovebird, red faced barbet, lead colored flycatcher, view animals like zebras, giraffes, elands, buffaloes, impalas, waterbucks, warthogs, topi, oribi grazing in the open savannah plains. After the game drive you will drive out of the park and start the journey to Kampala. On the way you will have en-route lunch at the Equator and then proceed to Kampala where you will reach early evening. Upon arrival you will be dropped off at Entebbe international airport for your departure flight or drop off at any place of convenience.
