Detailed itinerary
Day 1 of the 6 days Volcanoes and Nyungwe national park safari
Transfer to Volcanoes national park, depending on your arrival time on the first day of the 6 days Volcanoes and Nyungwe national park safari you will be welcomed by our driver guide who will give you a short briefing about your safari and then start the journey to Kigali for the city tour. During the city tour you will visit the genocide memorial centre where you will see graveyards of the victims who died during the 1994 Rwanda genocide and also listen to videos and audios. After the city tour you will have lunch in one of the hotels in Kigali and then start the journey to Volcanoes national park. On your way you will have great views of the rolling hills, homesteads, local people among others and upon arrival you will check into the lodge, have dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park
Gorilla trekking, after an early breakfast on the second day of your 6 days Volcanoes and Nyungwe national park safari you will carry packed lunch and meet up with your driver guide to transfer to Kinigi park headquarters for the briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. After the briefing you will be grouped into 8 people, allocated a gorilla family to trek and a park guide who is well conversant with the trails in the jungle. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park starts at around 8:00am and takes 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas.
During trekking you will have views of the bird species, animals, plant and tree species, primates among others and once the gorillas are found you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their natural habitat which gives you an opportunity to learn more about their behaviors, habits, watch them feed, breastfeed as you take photos and record videos with a flash less camera which gives you unforgettable experiences on your safari. After the one hour encounter with the gentle giants you will trek back to the park headquarters, meet up with your driver guide and transfer to the lodge for an evening relaxation, dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Golden monkey trekking and cultural tour
Golden monkey trekking, after an early breakfast on the third day of your 6 days Volcanoes and Nyungwe national park safari you will meet up with your driver guide and transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing about the expectations, rules and regulations to follow during golden monkey trekking. After the briefing you will start trekking in the jungle which takes about 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the location of the golden monkeys because they like to move from one place to another in search of food. Once the golden monkeys are found you will spend one hour with them in their natural habitat which gives you an opportunity to take photos, videos, learn more about their behaviors, habits, lifestyle, watch them jump from one tree to another which gives you interesting moments on your safari. After the one hour encounter with the golden monkeys you will trek back to the park headquarters meet up with your driver guide and drive to the lodge for lunch.
Cultural tour, after lunch you will go for a cultural tour in the neighboring communities where you will visit Ibyi’wacu cultural village. During the cultural tour you will have an opportunity of interacting with the local people, taste Kinyarwanda food, locally brewed beer made from bananas, be entertained by women as they perform Kinyarwanda dance, music, drama, listen to traditional stories among others. After the cultural tour you will transfer back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe national park
On the fourth day of your 6 days Volcanoes and Nyungwe national park safari you will have an early breakfast, check out of the lodge and meet up with your driver guide to transfer to Lake Kivu where you will enjoy spectacular views of the morning breeze, sunrise among others. From the lake you will continue with the journey to Nyungwe national park which takes about 4 to 5 hours drive. On the way you will have en-route lunch and great views of the landscape, beautiful scenery, hills among others and upon arrival you will check into the lodge have dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk
Chimpanzee trekking, after an early breakfast on the fifth day of your 6 days Volcanoes and Nyungwe national park safari you will meet up with your driver guide and transfer to the park headquarters for the chimpanzee trekking briefing. After the briefing you will be allocated a chimpanzee group to trek and a park guide who is well conversant with trails in the forest. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe national park takes about 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the location of the chimpanzees because they like to move deep into the forest in search of food especially during the dry season and once the chimpanzees are found you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their natural habitat which gives you an opportunity to learn more about their lifestyle, habits, behaviors, take photos and record videos to show people back home after the safari. After the one hour encounter with the chimpanzees you will trek back to the park headquarters meet up with your driver guide and drive back to the lodge for lunch.
Canopy walk, after lunch you will go for an exciting guided nature walk or canopy walk which is 90meters long above the forest. The canopy walk is an amazing activity that was opened in 2010 and Nyungwe national park is the only forest offering canopy walk in East Africa. The activity starts at Uwinka visitor’s center and goes through a huge trees across the steep and deep valley filled with thick forest. The breathtaking canopy walk takes about 2 hours and offers spectacular views of the forest canopy, birds, butterflies, primates like blue monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, tree species among others. After the canopy walk you will trek back to the starting point where you will meet up with your driver guide to drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Nature walk and departure
Nature walk, on the last day of your 6 days Volcanoes and Nyungwe national park safari you will have a relaxed breakfast, check out of the lodge, meet up with your driver guide to go for an exciting nature walk where you will visit Gisakura tea estate. Tea is one of the largest exports in Rwanda and if you visit during the weekdays you will be able to interact with the farmers who will be picking tea into the baskets and during the interaction you will be able to learn how tea is harvested, proceed and how it’s brought to the sweet taste. During the nature walk you will take great photos of the tea estate and the farmers collecting tea. After the nature walk you will start the journey to Kigali with en-route lunch on the way as you continue to Kigali international airport where your driver will drop you off in case you have a flight to catch.
